The One and Only Spiders
At the University of Richmond, we are proud to be Spiders — and proud to be the only university with a spider mascot. Just like the arachnid, Richmond students have ambition, curiosity, and determination.
But we’re often asked: Where did the Spiders nickname come from? It dates way back to 1894 and involves our baseball team’s pitcher’s long, spidery arms. We like to think it’s a fittingly unique mascot for a university unlike any other.

From crew to ice hockey, Richmond club and intramural teams have got you covered. Square off against other colleges or your fellow Spiders — from the field to the court to the pool. We offer over 25 club teams and a variety of intramural sports, and that list keeps growing. Choose from volleyball, rugby, water polo, equestrian, pickleball, ultimate frisbee, dance team, and more.
Alum Profile: Kobie Turner, LA Rams
Take a deeper dive into what's possible as a scholar-athlete at Richmond with Kobie Turner, the LA Rams defensive end who majored in mathematics and music. The teamwork and camaraderie he found on the stage with his choir and ultimately with his team on the field earned him the nickname "the conductor."
