BOOKS at the UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND
a page for students in emergency management, business continuity, homeland defense, and international disaster response
Course Offerings – Spring 2007:
This page includes a list of textbooks for courses in the coming semester, along with links to the publishers. We strongly recommend ordering your texts early to allow for delivery time so that you have the materials you need when the course starts. You can also obtain these books, in most cases, from the major online booksellers, but we have found that the publisher is rarely out of stock, whereas the online bookstores may be. We do not recommend ordering through a local bookstore, as that significantly delays delivery.
STUDENTS - BE SURE THAT YOUR COURSE SELECTIONS ARE GOING TO MAKE (6 or more students) AS LISTED IN BANNERWEB BEFORE YOU ORDER TEXTS.

ESM 549U - Comparative Disasters In The International Environment
Samantha Power. A
PROBLEM FROM HELL: AMERICA AND THE AGE OF GENOCIDE. New York, New York: Basic
Books, 2002. A thick book, this provides not only a look at all of the recent
major genocides, but it also provides an in-depth analysis of the United States,
and the international community in general, response to these events.
Mark Lynas. HIGH TIDE: THE TRUTH ABOUT OUR CLIMATE CRISIS. New York, New York:
Picador, 2004. An easy read, but also a provocative one. This volume translates
global warming into images that we can understand in the context of disaster.
Frederick C. Cuny. FAMINE, CONFLICT AND RESPONSE. West Hartford, Connecticut:
Kumarian Press, 1999. The classic manual on international famine and disaster
relief, written by the individual who defined the basic strategies that we now
accept as normal. Cuny was killed in Chechnya in 1995, and this book is his
legacy for disaster responders worldwide.
