Friday
January 2nd

  • Arrived in Mumbai. Grand Hotel (address: 17, Shri S.R. Marg, Ballard Estate, Mumbai 400 038)
  • Spent the rest of the day becoming acclimated with Mumbai via city walking tour.
  • Later that night, walked to the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Hotel. We were escorted by our favorite Mumbai native, Vishwaneth
  • Ate traditional Indian dinner in the Grand Hotel as students met individually with professors about research plans for the week

Saturday
January 3rd

  • Departed for the Elephanta Caves via ferry.
  • Visited Elephanta Caves. Toured and learned about the various sculptures of the caves from Ms. Manjiri Bhalerao of AIIS, Pune
  • Walked through the surrounding area of the caves
  • Returned to shore via ferry, ate lunch, and had the rest of the day to do individual research

Sunday
January 4th

  • Visited the Prince of Wales Art Museum
  • Toured various architectural landmarks in Mumbai with scholars from Sir J J School of Architecture
  • Saw the home of Rudyard Kipling, The Post Office of India, The India Times Building, Mumbai Train Station, and many others

Monday
January 5th

  • At 6:15 AM, students travled to Chowpati Beach to participate in a laughing club and perform sun yoga with the sunrise
  • Explored Malabar Hill area on foot
  • That night the students, accompanied by Dr. Pappu Rao and Sunali, went to a local theater to watch the feature "Bollywood" film, Kal Ho Naa Ho

Tuesday
January 6th

  • Travelled to Pune, India to pursue more specific research plans
  • Attended lecture on the Socio-Political History of Maharashtra
  • Days activities included visits to the National Film Archives, University of Pune, and other various musuems

Wednesday
January 7th

  • Lectured by noted director Amol Palekar. Since 1967, Palekar has been actively involved with Marathi and Hindi theatre, playing the varying roles of actor, director and producer
  • Travelled back to Mumbai to continue independent research

Thursday
January 8th

  • Visited with Dr. Sunil Patil and discussed mainstream "Bollywood" films
  • Toured MD Adlabs film studios and visited with three prominent figures in "Bollywood" film production and direction: Mr. Govind Nihalani, Mr. Manmohan Shetty, and Mr. Pravin Nishchay
  • Attended traditional Indian dance performance at the National Center for the Performing Arts, Nariman Point

Friday
January 9th

  • Students finalized their research on independent excursions
  • Visited the Kalbadevi marketplace
  • Final celebration dinner at a downtown Mumbai restaurant

Saturday
January 10th

  • Students spent the last morning in Mumbai shopping/finishing research
  • Checked out of hotel and departed for America

Sunday
January 11th

Arrived safely in Richmond, VA just in time to start the Spring 2004 semester
