35 WONDERFUL YEARS OF TEACHING FRENCH!

Retired for the first time after 33 years of teaching French in the public schools, I was surprised to have been called just two weeks later (!), in September 1994, to fill a special instructional need at the University of Richmond. This experience was like an invitation into heaven! Not only did it allow me to round out my French teaching experience from elementary school through the university level, but it also allowed me to take advantage of and assist the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures faculty and students in utilizing the wonderful computing facilities and World Wide Web access available at the University of Richmond. This was truly a dream come true for one whose life-long mission in teaching French has been (and still is) to facilitate genuine contact and communication with the Francophone peoples and cultures. Furthermore, this rich learning environment enabled me to move forward with the multi-media authoring projects I had planned to begin upon my retirement from public school French instruction.

My other "hats" remain those of family, friends, church, and community service. My husband Doug and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in August 2001.

Since retirement, in addition to our family, church, club and community activities we play a lot of  bridge, especially duplicate, and especially enjoy playing in our club's new Duplicate Pairs group which we initiated in the summer of 2002. Most of all, however, we bask in the glow of all the blessings that come with a durable marriage, three great children (a son and two daughters, all also happily married), and six wonderful grandchildren (including the youngest, our little Chinese granddaughter, adopted in China in October 2000). Here Sofia is with her new brother Tai (adopted in June 1996) :

Eric and Stephanie, the children of our daughter Lisa and husband Jay (and our oldest grandchildren), are pictured on the left, below, with their dog "Lickey" and one of their cats "Chip". On the right is the Christmas, 1997, picture of the children of our older daughter Nancy and husband John, Nicholas and Taylor, with their family dog, Ranger.

Below are pictures of Tai, our youngest grandson, whom our son Doug and daughter-in-law Ann adopted (after 5 1/2 months of agonizing red tape and 5 weeks in China) and brought home to the U.S. June 22, 1996. (Tai, now 5 years old and in Kindergarten,  is pictured above with his newly adopted sister, Sofia.) The picture on the left below shows Tai at 5 months with his new Mom Ann. On the right is Tai's Christmas '97 picture at the age of almost 2 years:

More recent pictures are available on our annual Christmas letter sites: Noel 1998, Noel 1999, Noel 2000, Noel 2001, and Noel 2002.

As for my more recent ventures in community service, I served for two years as a volunteer administrator for Central Virginia's Free-Net. Since its creation in August 1994 until July 1996, I created all the new accounts --- almost 6000! I reluctantly resigned this volunteer task (but still continue as a volunteer "provider"), when I was asked to take over the direction of the Multimedia Language Lab for the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Richmond in late June 1996 (a position from which I retired June 15, 1998 at the age of 68). I continue, as a voluntary service for the Central Virginia's Community-On-Line and the University of Richmond, as Webmaster of the UR-CVaNet Global Village and the Quartier français du village planétaire, a joint project designed to make the riches and wonders of the Web available to the Central Virginia community and beyond. The graphic Web version of the Quartier français du village planétaire was originally created in March 1995; this French portal site is now mirrored in every Francophone country in the world. My latest Web venture is a church service project begun in June, 2000,  when I became the Web Team Coordinator, Web Developer, and as of July 2000, Webmaster of the Salisburypc.org Web site of the Salisbury Presbyterian Church, Midlothian, VA, U.S.A. Even now in my second retirement these Web Development and Administration responsibilities take up a large portion of my time. However, my husband and I are avid bridge players and we run Men's, Mixed, and Duplicate Pairs Bridge Events at our club.
