University of Richmond

The Department of English offers students deep engagement with literary study, a pursuit that develops writing and critical reading abilities along with strengthening communications skills and critical thinking.

In addition to the study of literature, the English major covers a wide range of topics in its courses, from composition theory to creative writing to film studies. With small class sizes and faculty specializing in a variety of areas, students are exposed to a teaching style that encourages dialogue, and have access to faculty advisors who can match their area of interest and provide individual attention.

Along with a challenging curriculum, students have many opportunities to enrich their English major with experiential learning opportunities, which include research, internships and study abroad. Some students become so inspired that they choose to take advantage of a bridge experience after graduation, participating in a wide array of service learning and research projects in communities across the United States or the globe.

With the skills students gain studying English at Richmond, they go on to excel in graduate school or any number of career fields. Not only can English majors be found in the traditional areas of writing, editing or publishing, but in fields as varied as business, politics, journalism and medicine.
