University of Richmond Web Site Naming Policy

This policy provides Web site naming conventions and limitations applicable to the University of Richmond. It will enforce the name identity of each school, department and University organization or affiliation and will allow each organization to maintain its own sub-naming convention. It is intended to provide a logical, structured naming solution. The Web Steering Committee must approve requests for new Web site names. You may contact the committee at websteering@richmond.edu. The appropriate member will respond in a timely manner.

Policy

School names. Each school of the University of Richmond will be assigned one Web site name in the form of schoolname.richmond.edu. For example: Jepson.richmond.edu

Department names. Each department will be assigned one Web site name in the form of departmentname.richmond.edu. For example: biology.richmond.edu

Centers and institutes. Each University-funded center or institute will be assigned one Web site name in the form of center.richmond.edu. For example: speech.richmond.edu

Major events, permanent promotional sites and online publications. Each of these may, at the discretion of the Marketing Communications department, be assigned one Web site name, in the form of promotionname.richmond.edu. For example: brightminds.richmond.edu

University-affiliated or sponsored organizations. At the discretion of the Web Steering Committee, affiliated programs or organizations may obtain one Web site name, in the form name.richmond.edu. For example: keck.richmond.edu

Optional “www” prefix. When requesting an approved Web site name, an organization may also request an additional name in the form of www.name.richmond.edu. This is advisable for sites whose audience is often external. For example: www.engage.richmond.edu

Conferences, programs and services offered by schools or departments. Schools and departments are encouraged to create short URLs, in the form departmentname.richmond.edu/program or schoolname.richmond.edu/program. The department or school may request a redirect from the Office of Web Services when it is impractical to create new directories for naming purposes only.
