Language is a very important part of human cognition. After all, we are the only species that communicates in such a way. Some important subjects in linguistics that cognitive scientists study include how our brains allow us to develop language, what stages children pass through when they learn to speak, and how language affects our thought. The field of linguistics is intertwined with psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and artificial intelligence. Our progress in learning about language would not be nearly so great if cognitive science had not brought the five disciplines together to work towards the common goal of understanding the human mind.
