- Le VERBE français
:
Teachers and students of FLE will appreciate the presentation à la
française of the formation and usage du Présent
de l'indicatif. They will also find particularly helpful the Tableaux
de Synthèse des Verbes au présent de l'indicatif which
chart the basis of the three French verb groupings. These French Verb Synthesis
Charts are also used in connection with the verb analysis activities in the
above French History and Literature activities. For individual verb conjugations
and an increasing understanding of the French Verb system click on the:
- Tableaux
de Conjugaison des Verbes Françaises for the link to 7000
Verbes de la conjugaison française. Once there, enter the
verb in French (or even in English and eventually even in other languages),
and you will receive the complete conjugation with endings highlighted in
blue and the verb stems highlighted in red
of the "verbe type" of that verb conjugation ---followed by the
list of other French verbs conjugated in the same manner. For example, type
NOURRIR and you will receive the conjugation of the "verbe type"
FINIR with the explanation that "This is a verb of the 2ème
groupe. Voici la conjugaison type de la forme active des verbes en
-IR, -ISSANT." Or type CRAINDRE and you will receive the
conjugation of the verbe type PLAINDRE with the explanation:
"A savoir : C'est un verbe du 3eme groupe. Voici la conjugaison
des verbes CRAINDRE, CONTRAINDRE et PLAINDRE.".
- There is also a link to the Canadian site of Le
Devoir conjugal which offers the conjugation of 7913 verbes
français, as well the choice of interactive Exercices
autocorrectifs de conjugaison of the three French verb groups at
4 levels (beginner, intermediate, intermediate high and advanced).
SUGGESTIONS
FOR MAKING THE STUDY OF FRENCH REAL WITH THE QUARTIER FRANÇAIS
(Conseils pour faire réelle l'étude du français)
- Stopping by regularly at the Kiosque à
journaux, students (and francophiles
)
can all keep up with the full range of up-to-the minute French and international
Informations du Jour. Regularly checking
out this Agence France Press Actualités
("Current Events") page, for example, gives access to the latest breaking
news.
- Students are always particularly in Sports events and in Internet games.
Le Terrain des Sports/ Parc d'attractions/
Jeux : At this site, they can access the
latest news in French and International Athletic events, including the Olympic
Games (and the important Français <-> Anglais international Olympic
Games Lexiques, as well as the Amusement Park with Online Board and Virtual
Games.
A particularly interesting cross-cultural analysis project would be to
compare "Les titres de la une" (Front page headlines) in the French-speaking press
around the world with those of the American press. How important is the role of
Sports Headlines, internationally, for example?
- The Maison des Medias provides instant
access to high quality live "streaming" audio and video news (and music
!) en direct from the major French Radio and TV stations. Here you
can also :
- listen to clips from popular French songs,
- find the paroles of the latest French tubes,
- check out Le Cinéma française
et francophone,
- plan French and Francophone satellite and/or on-line "streaming" TV viewing
thus getting an insiders view of French and Francophone contemporaty culture
and culteral perspectives on current events.!
Needless to say, listening, and viewing authentic French media at the Maison
des Medias plus reading the French press at the Kiosque
à journaux , and checking out the latest in international sporting
events from the French point of view, with each skill building activity reinforcing
the others, will greatly increase French language and cultural proficiency!
- Using the Bibliothèque resources
students can
- conduct research on any aspect of French language and culture using the
Outils de Recherche including the major French search engines and
data bases, the major French and Francophone Bibliothèques,
and the Répertoire de Ressources Générales.
- For French literature and civilization studies, the Bibliothèque
contains the extensive Répertoires de la Littérature et
Civilisation françaises" as well as pointers to literary texts
(classified by literary period and by author) and historical sites classified
by historical epoch. Cross-referencing gives easy access to additional Ressources
WWW de la Civilisation française.
- The Ouvrage de Référence resources allow users to
verify and expand vocabulary choices, clarify French grammar points, research
cultural references.
- Note that in addition to the Ouvrage de Référence
links in the Bibliotheque, the Quartier français main page
Centre d'Accueil also links to the two
choice online French dictionaries (the Hachette Dictionnaire francophone
and the French Canadian Grand Dictionnaire Terminologique), plus the Atlas
Web Encyclopedia and the CNRS Dictionnaire des Synonymes. Additional French
Language Reference resources are included in the vast collection of
the École de la langue française.
These instantly available authentic French language and civilization reference
resources also enable students to carry out in-depth cross-cultural semantic research
projects such as the one described in Paulsen, J. (2001). Using
Authentic Online Target Language Reference Resources - The Cross-Cultural Semantic
Research Project.
- At the Ecole de la langue française,
additional French language help is readily available via:
- general French language resources,
- interactive "Tests d'Évaluation de Français" where
you can check out your French language skills,
- grammar and vocabulary development activities and resources,
- Interactive French lessons,
- letter-writing models and
- translation tools and services
The Bibliothèque, the Ressources
WWW de la Civilisation française, and the École
de la langue français provide resources for and enhance studies of
the French language and civilization at all levels ---beginner, intermediate,
advanced and beyond. The instant access to selected high-quality authentic linguistic
and cultural information, available in the past only through well equipped university
libraries and/ or through study abroad encourages increased language skills, increased
cross-cultural understanding, and life-long learning.
In addition to providing access to the ever-expanding online expostions,
the Musée's cultural resource data bases and instructional Webquest applications
further facilite students' French cultural studies (and appreciation
).
- At the Office de Tourisme (Tourist Office),
students and virtual travelers can:
- locate authentic, up-to-date maps and resources to supplement basic
Paris hotel, restaurant, metro and train units,
- tour French and Francophone cities and regions,
- shop at on-line stores,
- test your driving skills with online drivers' tests,
- explore the wonders of French cuisine,
visit famous museums
The ever-increasing resources of the Office de Tourisme
(Tourist Office) enable the students to find a wealth of authentic
information to prepare regional geography reports or an itinéraire sur
mesure pour visiter et connaître une région française
individually or in cooperative learning groups with an "electronic portfolio"
or PowerPoint presentation, travel brochures made in the Word Processor of choice
including graphics and information obtained during virtual visits, an oral classroom
presentation (or all of these together!).
- CORRES (keypals), FORUM, CHAT and CYBERCAFÉ discussion project possibilities
are available at the Café électronique
du Quartier français, where students can :
- participate in virtual socio-cultural exchanges with on-line French language
forums, IRC sites, schools ...;
- discuss topics of personnal, generational and/or universal concern; and
- find French-speaking «corres» (E-Pals).
With the "mailto:" option of these Café Électronique sites,
like mine which you can try here, you
can even interact with the site provider. In this manner, instant authentic communication
is possible at any Web site. Students could then email a copy of their correspondance
to their prof as proof of their authentic site visit and follow-up communication
activity!
Student socio-cultural exchange projects might include presenting their
own life-style(s), school and community by creating their own school's WWW welcome
page in French (Again, note the many examples at the Café
électronique, one of first and foremost being the Découvrir
Berkeley page created by first year French students at the University
of California at Berkeley), reporting, discussing and sharing orally in class
what they have learned about their French and Francophone peers and communities,
keeping records of their exchange in their electronic portfolios. For
evaluation, electronic journals and/or portfolios could be maintained containing
documentation of WWW visits, the weekly Newsgroup Rédaction postings,
bien corrigées, bien sûr! ;-) and, messages du courrier
électronique.
In discovery and interactive activities such as these, students will
have much more to contribute in French and most will also become motivated to
browse, explore and interact with their peers and with the Francophone peoples
in French, far beyond the scope and sequence of the text-based units. They will
have found a real and genuine self-directed means of achieving one of
their primary goals in choosing French ---direct access to and communication
with the French-speaking civilizations and peoples! Through the frequent
experience of this evident and easy access and interaction, they will find reason
to develop further their cross-cultural awareness and French language communication
skills. Finally, they will develop increased technology and multimedia research
and presentation skills as they create and share their own communication projects!
L'École primaire du quartier français
offers FLES teachers and the child in all of us a rich selection of Débats
and Forums, Comptines, Chansons et Poésies pour Enfants [Nursery
rhymes, Songs and Poetry for Children], Correspondants, Activités
pour t'amuser [Fun and enriching activities for Children], Ressources
et Guides pédagogiques de l'enseignement primaire [Parent and Teacher
Resources and Instructional Guides for Primary Education], La Fête
de Noël et d'autres fêtes [a rich collection of Christmas and
other French holiday songs, customs and activities], and Littérature
de la jeunesse [pointers to Children's and Youth Press and Litterature
publications].
Frequently, secondary school advanced level language programs offer opportunities
to interested students and/ or French Club members, to develop enrichment FLES
(Foreign Language in the Elementary School) programs. Students of all ages love
these songs and activities and gain increased skills and cultural knowledge
in the process. They may also be used in families wishing to give younger children
a head start in the language, particularly when such FLES programs are not available
locally.
- L'École de Commerce. beakons
French for Business students and those in International Business programs
Here they and their profs can find pedagogical resources for "Le
Français des Affaires", can check out Le cours de
la bourse sur Internet, le passage à l'EURO, European market
data bases and French business schools, and seek stage opportunities
through the various Chambres de Commerce and French entreprises
on the Web.
As stated in the Paulsen, J. (2001)
"New Era Trends and Technologies in Foreign Language Learning" article below,
"Current university trends such as global education, internationalization
of the curriculum, foreign-languages-across-the-curriculum, business language
programs, diversification of the student body, and increasing technical literacy
in students, have ushered in a new era of opportunities for language programs
in higher education."
A primary goal of this QUARTIER FRANÇAIS DU VILLAGE PLANÉTAIRE
is to provide the impetus and resources for teachers, students, and francophiles
to take advantage of and profit from these new era opportunities, trends and technologies.
Again, quoting from the same article:
"Today's students understand computers and the Internet, and
their professors are proficient in the languages they teach. When faculty
and students work together, exciting leaps in learning can take place. [...]
Authentic, meaningful, interactive, student-centerd, Web-based learning activities
can improve student performance in much the same manner as learning the language
and culture while studying abroad."
Hence the conception of the Quartier français as "a visite virtuelle
dans le monde francophone."
- Hence also, the inclusion of the Forum des Profs.
Here, busy teachers can keep abreast of important developments on the Francophone
Web which are first announced here in the "Quoi de neuf ? /Actualités"
[What's new?/ Current Events] section. Quick access to the French Informations
du Jour [late-breaking Association France Presse news] is also included.
The full range of Francophone Listes de diffusion, Forums et Conférences
enables French faculty to share in the latest professional developments. The
"Sites français incontournables" section provides a quick review
of the latest and best of the French Web. Links to the major Francophone and
Franco-American administrative and university resources complete the resources
of the Forum des Profs rubric for teachers of French.
